Friday, March 17th - MOPS DIVERSITY/CULTURE

It's that time again: Time for another great MOPS meeting.

This Friday, March 17th we will be discussing diversity/culture and how this shows up in our families and how we can broaden our families experiences in relation to other cultures and diversity.

We will be watching a great video and have some wonderful discussion.  So you can be prepped and do some thinking before hand, here are the discussion questions for the day.

1.  Tell about a significant cross-cultural relationship you've had. What did you learn about them? What did you discover about yourself? If none, why is that?

2.  How has your family of origin addressed your own ethnic/cultural (not racial) identity? Celebrated, hidden or ignored? How have you discussed your ethnicity or cultural history with your children?

3.  What is one step you can take today toward a more diverse way of life for you and your children?

4.  What stuck out to you most about the video today?

5.  What are some ways you think you can celebrate all differences more fully with your children?

Great questions, right?!

As always we will have coffee, tea, and breakfast ready and waiting.  Don't forget - its St. Patricks Day on Friday - so you had better wear some green!!

November 4, 2016: Welcome Boxes!

Hello MOPS Moms!  During out November 4th meeting we will hear about an exciting way that we can help our community: Welcome Boxes!

There are many foster children in the state of Oregon. These children can be removed from their homes or switched from foster homes at a moments notice - and with few belongings.  They often sit and wait in the DHS office while staff call and try to find a new placement.  This is a stressful time in an already stressful situation for these children.  This is where Welcome Boxes come in to play.

Please take some time to check out this link that will introduce you to the idea of Welcome Boxes for foster children:

10/7/16 Discussion Question for Ashley Larkin: Finding Your Sweet Spot: "what we can learn at the intersection of Sabbath, Service & Self-care"

Moreland MOPS will Ashley Larkin as our guest at the October 7, 2016 meeting.  Her topic for the day:

Finding Your Sweet Spot:  What we can learn at the intersection of Sabbath, Service & Self-care"

Discussion Questions:

1.  What is your relationship with the concept of balance? Do you believe it is attainable? Why or why not?

2.  Describe your own Sabbath experiences, if any.  How might you want to experience the "wonder" of Sabbath rest?

3.  When you consider that each of us is invited to do just a "fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God's work," what do you see as your part? Is hearing that you cannot do it all (and were not meant to) freeing or frustrating?

4.  Do you find it difficult to care for yourself and receive God's nurture of your body, mind and soul?  Or is this a place of joy for you?

5.  What is one small thing you might do to enter more fully into your "sweet spot" or, as Psalm 90:12 says, to live wisely and well?

October 7th - Ashley Larkin: Finding Your Sweet Spot

Moreland MOPS will welcome Ashley Larkin as our guest at the October 7, 2016 meeting.  Her topic for the day:

Finding Your Sweet Spot:  What we can learn at the intersection of Sabbath, Service & Self-care"

Finding Your Sweet Spot:

When Jesus was asked which of God's commandments was most important, he said this: To love God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength. And second: To love your neighbor as yourself.

Modern life fills with so many "shoulds," leaving many of us striving for ever-illusive balance, as we continually add more to our teetering lives.

This morning we will see an invitation to breathe and to simplify, to cease striving and comparing. We will talk about what it means to live in our sweet spots - where love for God, others and self intersect - a place of greater purpose, freedom and joy.

Who is Ashley Larkin:

Ashley Larkin is a speaker, writer, mentor, and mama to three daughters (Sicily, Julia, and Clara), who span elementary school to high school.

Ashley and Mike (her husband of 18 years) live with their girls and yellow lab, Clementine, in NE Portland. In her spare time, Ashley volunteers at her daughters' schools, teaches Sunday School and serves as a small group leader and teacher in her church's inner healing ministry.

Ashley began writing and speaking to connect - to help herself and others unwrap purpose in everyday, ordinary lives and ultimately remind each of us that we are not alone.

She hopes that this morning you might find a moment of pause, a breath of encouragement, a bit of grace, wisdom and hope, as well as a reminder to give thanks for the small, everyday things that are not so small after all.
